5 Tips to Pass the Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst PL-300 Exam

The Power BI Data Analyst Associate (PL-300) certification from Microsoft is a valuable qualification to have if you are an aspiring Data Analyst or if you want to sharpen your Power BI skills.

Obtaining this certification will give you well rounded overview of Power BI and can aid in the job search process, as it lets employers know that you have a basic understanding of the tool.


This certification tests the users Power BI skills in the following areas:


  • Data Preparation

  • Data Modeling

  • Visualization & Analytics

  • Deploying & Maintaining Assets

In this article I will be going through some tips to help you pass the exam:



1) Power BI Practice


Before you enroll for the exam make sure that you have had extensive practice with Power BI.


Take some time to familiarise yourself with the tools, functionality and features the program has to offer.


The best approach is to build a report from scratch using a sample dataset and then publish the report to a workspace in the Power BI Service. This exercise will test your Power BI skills and will help identify what areas you still need to work on.

2) Data Modelling


Data Modelling is an important part of Power BI and the exam will test your knowledge extensively on this topic.


Make sure you have a good understanding of the following concepts:


  • Table Relationships (E.g. one-to-many)

  • Cardinality

  • Semantic Model Modes (Import vs DirectQuery)

  • Star vs Snowflake schemas

  • Power Query basics



3) Practice Exams


Taking practice exams is an important part of exam preparation. These tests will help you assess your knowledge and identify areas for improvement. Practice exams will also help you understand the exam format and how the questions are asked.

4) Review the Study Guide


It is important to go through the study guide in detail as it will summarise what areas will be covered within the exam and will give you information on what to focus on. Please make sure to review this guide periodically as the topics covered may change from time to time.

Connect with others who are preparing for the exam as this will provide you support and a space to ask questions.


You can join groups on LinkedIn such as the Power BI one. I find these groups helpful as you can ask a question as there are many people who are willing to help out.
